ROUND 17

Under 18's

The Under 18's faced a Sandhurst team that was well prepared and fiercely determined to enter their finals campaign on a winning note last Saturday.

Unfortunately for our buys a fast start by Sandhurst and an equally fast finish made the result a for gone conclusion. However the boys really did continue to show that they have lots of spirit by never giving in. Last weekend the Under 18 team played it's 44th player of the season and this whilst unsettling to the group it has been inevitable given the number of players playing senior football and the horrid run that the Under 18's have had with injury. However what it really does show, is that the future has some bright prospects at junior level. Awards for our better players went to Jackson Manning, Pat Russell, Laiton Frisk & Toby Frankel and special mentions should be made of Billy White, Ash Benbow and Matt Wiegard. The leadership being shown by a number of players that have another year at Under 18 level is exceptional and Jugga also wants to commend the second tier players that are standing up and being counted now that the first tier is playing senior football. This weekend against Maryborough is a huge game, with the winner holding the 7th spot on the ladder at year end and the loser occupying the 8 th spot. The boys need your support so please get along and cheer as loud as you possibly can.

Reserves

Goal scorers: Jacko (2), Blair, Loomesy & Scobes (1).

Best Players: Leroy, Sprocket, Bubbles, Climo, Cashman & Billy.

A slow start and a bad 3 rd quarter cost the boys dearly last weekend. Sandhurst piled on 5 goals to 1 in the first quarter and after an even second quarter, the slagheads led by 24 points. The third quarter was like the first, with the opposition adding a further 6 goals to our 1. Leroy, Sprocket & Climo were doing all they could down back, while Bubbles & Billy were doing their bit in the centre. In the end, Sandhurst ran out 10 goal winners. The boys have a real opportunity to finish the season on a high today. Go Roos!

Seniors

Goal getters: Ty Zantuck 5, M Warry 4, M Holt 1, T Holt 1, and R McNish 1.Best players, Ty Zantuck, D Hickey, A Moore, M Warry, J Wiegard and Tim Brooks.

Before the game the boys had high expectations that they would do well, which come to fruition. They started well in the first quarter, carrying out the game plan that John had instructed. This put Sandhurst on the back foot. Although the score wasn't on the board in the first quarter the boys still played well. In the first quarter Sandhurst kicked 6 goals to one. At the quarter time break John reiterated to the young troops that things were going well and to stick to the game plan. The players were carrying out the game plan to the letter as we went on to kick our highest score all season, for one quarter which resulted in Sandhurst being caught on the back foot. This was very encouraging and was what John has been working toward. Half time saw the Rooers peg the lead back by and again looked in the running. As it has been mentioned time and time again, we must play 4 quarters to win a match. This was apparent again on Saturday as we let our focus slip for a third term 8 goal to one blow out. As we re-focused at three quarter time, we once again held the opposition and out scored them in the last quarter. Good effort all round. We know what we have to put out to win..........let's do it against Maryborough.....Go ROOERS...............

A reminder to all the footballers, Netballers and Supporters that have a raffle book to sell. Although the major raffle is being drawn at the presentation night (October 19 th ), please get your book back to Leroy a.s.a.p. There are some great prizes and with only 25 tickets per book, no one should be bringing back unsold tickets! These are the fundraisers that really help the club out and go towards improving facilities and equipment.

Netty News:

A good weekend of netty last week by the girls against the Hurst squad. Carol must've been very pleased with the overall outcome on the day. Of course a win in the U.17 & A grade would have been better, but the endeavour on the day displayed in these 2 games was great and a good effort by all concerned. A little bit disconcerting to learn that Gisborne had forfeited to the Square in the U.17's last week because had we came off with a win in that grade, we would've been right in there with a chance, breathing down their necks so to speak. Good effort by the B grade chicks to come off with a win by 1 goal! I think we're all getting used to these exciting finishes as we seem to be doing it quite a bit this year. Good to see we can hold ourselves together in tight situations. A Reserve had a good win and exhibited why they're sitting up near the top of the ladder. I hope they can go all the way this year, even it is so I can see a number of pledges executed. Speaking of which, how good was the Barbie Bonding Night??! Thanks to all those who supported the evening, the Princess & I were rapt. I think all had a good time and the purpose for which we had the night was met. We bonded! If A Reserve do go on this year to win the grand final, a number of pledges were given of certain performances that would occur. Personally, I can't wait! Thanks very much to the girls who donated food on the night, it was appreciated by all in attendance. Special thanks also to the chaperones, but funnily enough, I think several of them were more out of hand than any of the Barbies! All in good spirit and we loved it! Congratulations to Sasha who won the inaugural Barbie 2007 title in her theme of Malibu Barbie. Special mentions to Devil Barbie (Sam), Cowgirl Barbie (Paris), Disco Barbie (Nina) and my personal favourite, Valentine Barbie (Mary-Kate). A very special mention to those young fellows that happened to be on the oval when we were finishing up the night. I only wish, and I really really wish, that I knew that I could've turned the floodlights on the oval! What a sight. They were like a FLASH in the pan as they ran across that oval! The funniest bit was when Andrea was yelling out that's **** and that's **** and then someone else yelled out “that's Tim Brooks!” This is what makes a footy club precious. Memories like that will live forever, long after the rest of us have gone. But someone somewhere will repeat that story in years to come, “Remember the Barbie Bonding night, and remember those young lads on the oval?” and we'll laugh and laugh and we'll be glad we were there! Good luck to all the Flat girls that are part of the finals race. My motto for the finals is “No Regrets”. You don't get a second chance out there during the finals, so do your best and love your team and you'll be right. The hot weather's on its way, so plenty of hydration before games will be the key. Catch you all there by the court. Wicks.

ROUND 15

Under 18's:

The Under 18's recorded a very impressive win against an undermanned but determined Castlemaine outfit. The 111 point victory was extremely impressive on a number of counts, the fact that the boys had 37 scoring shots was as impressive as the result and they also demonstrated a willingness to listen to the coach as they implemented Jason's game plan well. The club is very grateful for the services of 6 young men who were permitted from the Sandhurst Marist Dockers, those guys all demonstrated that they can play football and the club hopes they gain their services in 2008. With numerous players unavailable due to senior selection, injury and unavailability the Under 18's have used 38 players already in season 2007 making stability hard to find and it is a credit to the team that they were able to play together this weekend considering the number of new faces.

Jugga was also impressed that the new leaders had an impact on the day, Manning, Brooks, Mason & McGrath-Hudson all impacted the contest and considering they were all new to the leadership role (because the original

5 leaders were unavailable) they showed that the team has some good leadership skills all over the oval. On the day our better players were hard to pick, Brooks with an 8 goal haul from the stationary full forward position was a major highlight, as was the leadership ability of Jackson Manning & Jared Mason. Matt Halacas worked hard all day and deserves a mention and so to does Patt Russell who played consistent football carrying illness and Jake McInerney who was used all over the ground. Brodie Fraser, Ben Hughes & Dylan Clohesy all showed great ball use and Rhys Williams, Trav Tieman & Hayden Pierce were all steady rocks when used in defence.

Award winners were: Brooks, Manning, Fraser & McInerney.

The Under 18's are looking forward to today's contest against another fierce rival in North City . They are hoping to get another win up in preparation for a big season 2008.

Reserves:

Goal Kickers – K Hawker (2), N Moore (2), L Wylie (1), W Collins (1), R Dwyer (1).

Best Players – K Hawker, D Stockx, T Nolan, L Stevens, L Climas, N Bath .

In windy conditions, the boys put in a really spirited effort to come home with the 4 points. It is pleasing to see the reserves holding on to win these close games and all looks good for a big 2008. Kage & Bubbles were in everything and the backline of Sprocket, Leroy, Climbs & Trav played some great linkage football. Snake chipped in for a few sausage rolls as did Levi, Walrus & Robbie D. The boys are hoping for 2 in a row when they meet North City today. Good luck fellas!

Seniors:

Goal Kickers – M Warry (3), Trent Zantuck (2), T Brooks (2), Ty Zantuck (2), R Wicks (1), C Harrington (1).

Best Players - M Holt, D Hickey, D Stephens, Trent Zantuck, T Brooks, J Rombo tis.

The first quarter was a close affair with teams going goal for goal. The swirling breeze didn't help the skills all that much, but both teams handled the conditions well. The roos went in to quarter time all tied up with the magpies on 20 points. The second quarter was arguably the best quarter of football the boys had played all year. The lads piled on 5 goals and were able to keep Castlemaine to 2 goals. After half time, the wheels fell off. Undisciplined acts cost us dearly on the scoreboard and in the wash-up, Castlemaine scored 10 second half goals to our 4. Well done to first gamer Dave Stephens for his great game. And it is great to see the youngsters in the best players again.

The boys have had a great week on the track and if the game plan is executed correctly, we should be seeing our first 4 points of the year today! Go Roos!

ROUND 14

Under 18's:

Goal Kickers – J McInerney (2), J Pitto, J Bowyer, J Manning (1).

Best Players – M Wiegard, T Frankel, J Thurrowgood, J Manning, J McGrath-Hudson.

The boys were never really out of the game until the last quarter when Gisborne kicked 4 goals to the Roos none. Considering the amount of injuries the thirds have at the moment, and players competing at senior level, they are doing a great job. Keep working hard boys!

Reserves:

Goal Kickers – C Scoble (4), J McInerney (3), N Moore (1).

Best Players – N Moore , L Wylie, C Scoble, J McInerney, A Hingston, K Hawker.

With only 13 available reserves at the start of the day, anything could have happened. But in true Roo spirit, the boys fought the game out right til the end. To only go down by 9 goals to a side that has only lost one game for the year was a great effort. A big mention to the thirds that backed up for a second game.

Seniors:

Goal Kickers - D Manning (2), J Rombo tis (2), B Peters (1), D Manning (1).

Best Players - J Rombo tis, T Zantuck, N Lang, M Holt, T Holt, J Wiegard.

Last Saturday we travelled to the Graveyard, with a big job in front of them playing Gisborne, the Roos came to play. The boys effort in the first quarter was excellent with plenty of contested acts lead by first gamer, Mitch Holt. He showed the other players how to be in and under. First quarter scores were 2 goals to eight. With the interchange bench slowly dwindling through injury, our rotations were getting harder to complete. Second quarter was a great effort with Gisborne only kicking 5 goals to our one.  After half time the back hoe came out and dug our grave. Gisborne were superior in all facets of the game. Our players regrouped with the leadership of Rombo and we continued to put pressure on Gisborne which in turn resulted in a very good performance in the last quarter, keeping Gisborne to only 7 goals in the last quarter with 18 entries inside 50. The opposition would agree that we never gave up all day. Great effort boys with no-one on the bench for most of the day......Go Rooers

Seniors

Goal's Warry,(2),Trent Zantuck,(1) J Wiegard (1), J Mason(1),J Rombotis (1) ,,,,,, Best D Holzer Trent Zantuck, J Rombotis, R McNish,J Wiegard.  The score line was disapionting but I would say our boy's didn't give in, they were just out classed on the day. The back line was very good all day but couldn't stop the onslaught of running by the Square in the midfield. With very week that passes our young boys are getting that much needed experience under their belts. GO Roo's

Don't forget the Roolander Fashion Parade, this week 4/8/07.

ROUND 12

Under 18's:

The Under 18's suffered a heart breaking defeat at the hands of a very
spirited South Bendigo team last weekend. The guys made some crucial
mistakes during the game and undoubtedly 5 free kicks in the South Bendigo
forward 50 that resulted in goals didn't help the result. Generally the
team played to the structure that Jugga was trying to implement but lacked
the finishing skills to get over the line. With some players unavailable
the Under 18's welcomed back 2 of their captains (Crowie & Nish) but
couldn't over come South Bendigo .
Jugga really wanted to commend the performance of the players who played on
permit Saturday being Jack Bowyer from our Under 16.5 team and Ben Hughes
from the Sandhurst Marist Dockers Under 16.5 team. Both boys played some
exceptional football and really looked at home against the more senior
Under 18 footballer's.
Better Players against South Bendigo were: Tyson Cope, Billy White, Pat
Russell, Matt Wiegard, Jared Mason, Ben Hughes, David Stephens & Daniel
Crowe. This weekend the Under 18's face Golden Square who are also coming
off a 1 point defeat, it should be a good game of football and we all need
to really support the Under 18's because they are the future of this footy
club.

Reserves

The boys had a great win.

Seniors

Competitive to half time and then overrun by South.

ROUND 11

Reserves

A pleasing performance and although the opposition was under manned I was happy with the result. Some good individual efforts by Brad Peters Dane Stockx Livi Wylie and Nathan Moore chipped in with 4 goals. If we keep this team together we should win moore games, go two's.

Seniors

Goal's B Hawker 2, T Holt 2 , M Warry, D Thornycroft,J Rombo tis,K D'Silva,C Harrington,  Best players,,, R Mc Nish,Trent Zantuck, B Hawker,D Crowe K D'Silva,C Harrington . R Wicks ,    We had a very good start to the game kicking 5 to 2 in the first Quarter then we matched them in the second quarter, and the boy's were doing well even when we lost young Nick in the 1st quarter with concussion ,and taken to hospital for observation , after half time we lacked a bit of direction ,with Langy not on the ground and with the lack of experience ,in most parts of the ground  we just fell away .But that is what the boys are learning ,how to go on with the game ,with 7 players not playing over 10 games each, they will drop off some time and although it is disappointing, they are trying and learning at the same time .....GO Roo's

ROUND 10

Under 18's:

The Under 18 team really never gave in against a talent loaded Under 18
Eaglehawk outfit. Jugga was very impressed with his team who had 5 members playing senior football and 5 other key members missing through major injury or unavailability. The club is really developing from the ground up and the performance of the Under 18 boys that are playing seniors is
fulfilling for all associated with the Under 18's, especially the coach.
The boys fought out the contest right to the end but Eaglehawk was far to
powerful on the day. Credit must go to the Under 16.5 boys who backed up and played a second game of footy for the weekend and Jason also wanted to highlight the players that are continuing to play whilst carrying injuries. Best players against Eaglehawk were hard to award but Jared Mason continued his good form, Billy White after he stopped kicking the ball out of bounds on the full looked good, Matt Wiegard tried hard and Craig Peters also tried hard. This weekend the Under 18's take on Kyneton at Dower Park and they are all keen to get back onto the winners list. Last time Kyneton should have got the chocolates and this time the boys will need to fight hard to ensure we can start the day off successfully.

Seniors

Goal Kickers    T Brooks, J Hobley, R Mc Nish, M Warry, J Wiegard all Kicked 1   Best players M Lehane,T Brooks,Trent Zantuck,R Wicks,G Daly, N Lang.    The boys had a point to prove this week with 3 EX. Kangas playing with E / Hawk, Brown , Milward and then Belz playing on Saturday in the reserves we had to have a good showing, In the 1st quarter they started slowly with a 3 goal start to the Borough. but with the old man Ron on Milward, Milward was shut out of the game. We kicked 3 late goals to be with them at 1/4 time.  The Hawks got on top in the 2nd quarter but didn't look like they would run away with the game as everyone expected there to be a blow out. I think Filo's 1/2 time spray would have been as cold as a mother-in-law's kiss  but the Roo's just kept at it in the 3rd term. In the last quarter they give it their all, not giving in but giving their hearts until the final siren. A good example of never say die was Luke Hyland who kept Filo goalless and Liam Closhey caused Brownie a few problems leaving his stats at 1 goal for the day. The boys just didn't let the hawks play well which was a great effort WELL DONE  Go Roooooooo'S

ROUND 9

Seniors v Maryborough

Goal's  J Hobley 2, D Holzer 2,J Weigard 2, R McNish 1,T Holt 1, K D'Silva 1,D Hickey 1 ............ Best Players,,,,Trent Zantuck,C Wilmot N Lang,K D' Silva,D Hickey , A Moore.....There was a good bit  of a shinning Light this week . and it all started with the youngest mid field in the comp.and playing to the game plain which  John  has given them . the likes of Lang, McNish and Crowe got us on the front foot early in the game, these boy's are our future, it would be good to keep them playing firsts for the rest of the year it would stand them in good stead for next year and there careers from there on. .Not only were these three good but we had multiple winners all over the ground for the day. With a 7 point loss the boys could hold their heads high. we are not that far away from a win. It will be hard work this week against the Borough but we know they will give it all. Go Roooooooooo's

ROUND 8

Under 18's v Sandhurst Round 8 notes

Our under 18's came up against an undefeated Sandhurst team at the QEO last
Saturday and the challenge was just to great for the undermanned team. With
Under 18 players playing senior football and playing good senior football
and injuries to key players the Under 18's proved that they were able to
match it with Sandhurst for a half of football. However a half of football
isn't enough when you are playing the league leader at their home ground.
Better players on the day were; Matt Wiegard, Sam Alford, Liam Bolger,
Billy White, Toby Frankel and Daniel Crowe. This weekend the Under 18's
face their most pivotal game of the season to date, Maryborough at Dower
Park . The Maryborough boys are sitting on the same win loss record as our
team and will be very keen to win this game, a loss today and the finals
are all but out of reach for our Under 18's with this challenge you can
rest assured that the boys will be fired up and raring to go.

Seniors v Sandhurst Round 8 notes

J Weigard,,2 Trent Zantuck,,  1 J Hobley,, 1 C Harrington,,1 Ty Zantuck,, 1R Mc Nish,, 1 B Hawker,,1  the day stated well with a great centre break and a quick goal , the boys were applying good pressure all over the park for the 1st quarter . Which resulted in a 1/4 time score of 2, 4 16 to 2,5 17 . with Langy  , Zantuck & Rombo tis winning the ball out of the centre all day 19 to 9 centre breaks for the day but around the ground we broke down after 1/4 time and let Sandhurst get the run going and we couldn't stop it , in saying that the roo boys didn't give in all day they kept at it , was a lot better showing from LAST week's effort which was dismal, the boys worked hard and the score board didn't show the real result. Well done. The better effort was capped off by a great night for our 1920's Annual Ball.  Go Rooers

           M Warry         1

           B Wilmott       1

We had it spent before the game when we thought we had it won. It was disappointing to see the insipid effort after the first 10mins of the 1st quarter. The game was lost with undisciplined acts from some of the senior players.  We will never win games by giving away 7 X 50 metre penalties. In saying this we can only hope that we can all learn a great deal from this game. Look out Slagheads......Go Rooers !!!

ROUND 6

Games played at Castlemaine for the inaugural Anzac Day Match Seniors & Reserves 25/4 and U18's on 28/4/07

Seniors

After a moving Anzac Day ceremony on the field our first game started well with plenty of promising signs for the 2007 season. Our new recruits and key forwards played a big part in the game and first half, with even scores at half time. As the game unfolded our lack of 1%ers and the targets that John Rombotis set were not achieved for any quarter.  If we reach these targets we will win. There were good signs that the team will come together very well during the season.  Score 9.9 63 to 14.17 101

Goalscorers : Ty Zantuck 6, Trent Zantuck, Michael Harrington, Tyson Holt 1

Best players : Chris Harrington,Ty Zantuck, Ron Wicks, Tyson Holt, Denis Hickey, Jarad Wiegard & Daniel Manning

ROUND 5

Under 18's

The teams up and down season continued last round against Gisborne.
The boys displayed patchy form and it is a source of frustration for Jason.
The round 7 clash against North Ballarat can not come quick enough for they

are looking to prove that they are better than a 3 win 3
loss team and want to step up against another challenger and perform to the
best of their ability. All of the emotion of the day lead to a quick start
and the players really appeared eager to get the points but a spirited
fight back from the talented Gisborne side couldn't be matched by our
players and unfortunately some blazing away at goal and inaccurate kicking
resulted in what was close to a 5 goal defeat.
Better players on the day were Jared Mason, James McGrath-Hudson, Ryan
McNish & Ash Benbow. There should have been more better players but so many
that were asked for big performances did not perform, there is a chance to
redeem this against North Ballarat, Sandhurst and Maryborough and the team
must do that.

Reserves

With a fill in side made up of guys that have limited experience at senior level, we never stopped trying all day which is a credit to the players that made it out on to the field. These guys should be proud of themselves for there endevour and commitment all day, keep your heads up i'm sure a win is just around the corner. better players :R.Dwyer L.Cimas T.Hewish

Seniors

N Bath {1} T Brookes {1}   Being under manned for the day and there were only 5 or 6 players who had played more than 5 games for the club, the boys never gave up all day. By fighting the game out they gained respect from the opposition's coach through positive comments after the game. John was pleased in the way we finished the game off  in the second half, for a good build up next game against North City , which we will hopefully have our full senior side on the paddock.....Go Rooers...

. ROUND 4

Under 18's:

Congratulations on a sensational performance by the Under 18's. The team
welcomed back captain Ryan McNish, key player Toby Frankel and 2006 Under
16.5 Best & Fairest winner Billy White for the match against Golden Square
and their structure instantly appeared better. The team's ruckman Nick Lang
played in the senior side and lived up to his potential but the Under 18's
managed to cover the loss of Langy and play their best football for the
season. The boys have had a big two weeks on the training track and they
are seeing the rewards. Their fitness base has improved while their
teamwork and ability to adhere to Jugga 's game plan is evident. The under
18's are building confidence; they are now enjoying being part of the
football club and are becoming quietly confident in their ability.

Best players Vs. Golden Square were Mitch Holt who played with fearless
abandon and really displayed some sensational leadership, James
McGrath-Hudson also played a great game, he was released from the negative
tagging role and proved dangerous in front of goals and the third best
player was without question Ash Benbow, Ash showed a great ability to read
the play, used the ball well to set up his team mates and finished off with
2 sensational running goals. In some eyes his celebration highlighting the
Kangaroo Flat jumper was the biggest play of the day. Other good players
were Daniel Crowe, Matthew Wiegard, Patty Russell and Craig Peters.

Today the Under 18's take on a Gisborne team that has a number of season
2006 key players still in the line up, it will be a big challenge but the
boys want a 4-2 record and will do everything in their power to achieve
this.

Seniors

N Bath 2   R Wicks 1 goal.    The day started very well by matching the Square in the 1st and 2nd terms, the boys were playing well, hard at the ball and the CA's were up as it showed in the scoreboard.  Nick was matching and beating Hammer in the centre and around the ground he has a big feature in the 3rd Quarter.  Half way through we dropped off the intensity and the Square started to get on top, and the last quarter we dropped right off, we have to play all 4 quarters.

ROUND 3

U18's

Disappointing loss, but the boys keep plugging away.

Reserves

A dissapointing loss with only three goals for the game all scored in the final term.  We need to improve on our skills before we can win games like this. On a positive our backline was great and the pressure applied stopped the game from being a blow out. Better players Liam Gill, Leigh Stevens and Kyle Hawker .

Seniors

The day started off very well when we had 2-3 to 3-2 in the first quarter . Then it went down hill, but the young boys on the paddack tried hard . South had too much run for us ,if we put John's plans into practice for FOUR quarters we will get better results. All our young players Frankel, McNish, Daly and Hyland bro's will all be better players by playing a full season in the ONE'S. Heads up, we have next week to look forward to with our clash against the Square. GO ROOERS

ROUND 2

U18

The boys won by one point.  The game was a little disappointing as was won in unconvincing fashion.

Reserves

A  slow start but better effort all round. We need to get the goals on the board early, so we are not playing catch up footy after quarter time. We are slowly starting to gel as a team and with a bit more commitment to pre-game preparation we will win games.

Seniors

Once again, we have let ourselves down by not playing 4 quarters of football. By letting the opposition get the jump on us in the first quarter we then have to play catch up footy for the next 3 quarters. We had very few winners all day but the one big winner we did have was a new boy to the club by the name of Dennis Hickey and Ty with limited opportunity kicking 6 goals. The lack of moving the ball quickly and in too the corridor did not give our forwards much of a chance to be one on one. We did prove in the third quarter that this can be done. When we put 4 quarters together we win come up winners.....Go Rooers!!!

Goal Kickers - Ty Zantuck  6   Liam Closhey 1  Jarryd Wiegard 1   Toby Frankel  1   Tim Brooks   1
